Let the SCO Chorus take you on new musical adventures in 2022/23
The SCO Chorus and its Director Gregory Batsleer are thrilled to be back performing together again. The Chorus had two outings during the summer - in Stirling and St Andrews - and it was wonderful to hear them perform for such responsive and appreciative audiences.
As we look forward to the SCO’s upcoming 2022/23 Season here’s where you can expect to see (and hear!) the Chorus in action, both with the Orchestra, and on their own. Why not let us transport you out of your day-to-day and take you on an journey of musical discovery?
The Creation
We start in October with The Creation, Haydn’s life affirming choral masterpiece that charts seven days of intense invention and is an expression of hope and optimism - and we could all do with a little bit of that at the moment. Principal Conductor Maxim Emelyanychev takes the helm for this roof-raising celebration of life!

Israel in Egypt
The Creation will certainly be a hard act to follow, but we think Handel’s gripping choral masterwork, Israel in Egypt will inspire and delight you. Conductor and harpsichordist, and long-time SCO collaborator, Richard Egarr, returns for the high drama of this thrilling and theatrical oratorio. Richard is joined by a brilliant cast of solo singers who join the SCO Chorus for two performances in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The Heart of Night - SCO Chorus Christmas Concert
A much-loved fixture on the Scottish musical calendar, the SCO Chorus’ seasonal concert ushers in the festive season with a warming collection of music in the atmospheric surroundings of Greyfriars Kirk. We look forward to performing some of seasonal favourites alongside composer Anna Clyne’s contemplative The Heart of Night, written especially for the SCO Chorus.
20 & 21 December 2022
Edinburgh
The Dream
In their first performance of the new year, the sopranos and altos of the SCO Chorus join Maxim Emelyanychev and the Orchestra for an evening with Mendelssohn the magician. Creator of sunny, carefree worlds, and of spectacular Shakespearean evocations, this is musical storytelling at its most vivid.

Handel: Music for the Royals
George Frideric Handel saved his most extravagant offerings for royal occasions, creating music expressly conceived to impress and astonish. Canadian conductor, and Handel expert, Bernard Labadie, leads proceedings with the exuberant Water Music and the glittering Music for the Royal Fireworks sitting alongside the roof-raising choral glories of Zadok the Priest and The King Shall Rejoice. A concert of dazzling works designed to delight kings and queens!

Brahms Requiem
Conceived as a humanist alternative to the Latin mass for the dead, Brahms' German Requiem is very much intended for the comfort of the bereaved, hence its intense warmth and overriding message of hope. Maxim Emelyanychev returns for this concert, providing a reflective close to the Season - just what will be needed with Covid 19 firmly behind us.

The SCO Chorus, and Orchestra, are in for an exciting and busy year, and we can’t wait for you to hear them in action together!
