Felix Mendelssohn: Hebrides Overture, Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage & A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Released 20 November

Following the critically acclaimed first album devoted to Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphonies Nos. 3 & 5 (Trophées Radio Classique, Amadeus d’oro, among many accolades), we have joined Principal Conductor Maxim Emelyanychev for a second volume comprising three works inspired by the composer’s literary passions. Starting with the evergreen Hebrides Overture – the result of Mendelssohn’s devotion to Sir Walter Scott that led to a trip to Scotland – the programme continues with the Goethe-inspired Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage Overture and ends with the Shakespearean incidental music for A Midsummer Night’s Dream, featuring vocalists Hilary Cronin, Rowan Pierce and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra Chorus. Suffused with magic and mystery, A Midsummer Night’s Dream includes arguably the world’s most famous tune: the ‘Wedding March’. This album adds another layer to a partnership that has grown steadily stronger over the years and is set to continue into the next decade.

The CD is available to preorder through online shops such as Presto, Juno and Proper Music. The 'Hebrides Overture' is available to stream now.
