Shaun began his musical studies playing cornet with the local school brass band and was soon Principal Trumpet with the Wiltshire Youth Orchestra. He started his studies with Colin Casson at the Welsh College of Music and Drama. Whilst there he played regularly with the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra and was busy performing with the many Welsh music societies. Shaun was honoured to receive the Harlech Television award in his second year of college.

When he completed his studies in Cardiff, Shaun entered the Royal College of Music in London; the only trumpeter accepted that year for post-graduate study. He was fortunate at the RCM to have two notable professors in David Mason and Michael Laird. Whilst in London, Shaun kept busy performing with the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra, London Mozart Players and several ensembles. In 1980, Shaun moved to Glasgow to take up a position with the Scottish Opera Orchestra where he met his wife to be who was a singer in the company.

Following seven years ‘in the pit’ at the Opera, he was invited to join the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. He is also Principal Trumpet with the Scottish Concert Orchestra.

Shaun has played with many British orchestras including the BBC Symphony, London Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with the Orchestra of St Cecelia and the Pittsburgh Orchestra. A particular highlight was the invitation to play with the Grimethorpe Brass Band at the Montepulciano Festival in Italy some years ago, sharing the piazza with the local circus and Fire Brigade Bands. Another of his most enjoyable and rewarding tours was to Germany and Belgium with the ‘Brass Band Spectacular’.

Shaun is kept quite busy ‘roadying’ for his two sons’ ceilidh band whilst running a plumbing, kitchen and bathroom business.
