The Scottish Chamber Orchestra’s annual Summer Tour returns to Oban with another delightful programme of music.

To begin, Haydn’s Symphony No. 95 which, unlike his other ‘London’ symphonies, dispenses with a slow introduction, and instead commands the attention of the listener from the offset with five dynamic opening notes. That dramatic promise is fully delivered in a fiery finale that marshals the strength of the entire orchestra, making toe tapping almost compulsory.

Haydn’s feisty, earthy drama is delightfully contrasted by the airy, bright and slivery tones of Mozart’s Flute Concert No 2. If a delicate summer breeze was set to music, surely it would sound like something like this.

Summer sunshine is never a given in Scotland, so to end the evening, let us transport you briefly to Italy with Mendelssohn’s joyous and life affirming Symphony No.4 ‘Italian’. As Mendelssohn himself wrote ‘It will be the jolliest piece I have ever done, especially the last movement’ and we couldn’t agree more. Viva l'Italia!
