Ancient styles with bold modern flavours: meetings between the old and the new thread through this stimulating concert directed by SCO Leader Benjamin Marquise Gilmore. Peter Warlock makes a modern twist on 16th-century dance tunes in his charming Capriol Suite, while Grieg combines the Baroque invention of Bach, Handel and Scarlatti with a distinctive Nordic folk twang in his buoyant Holberg Suite. The ancient theorbo is in the spotlight for British composer Stephen Goss’s new Concerto, performed by the spectacular Matthew Wadsworth – and even Geminiani gets in on the act by taking his teacher Corelli’s already virtuosic Concerto Grosso and making it even more ingenious and brilliant.
Benjamin Marquise Gilmore grew up in England and studied with Natalia Boyarskaya at the Yehudi Menuhin School and Pavel Vernikov at the Vienna Conservatory, as well as with Julian Rachlin, Miriam Fried, and members of the Artis quartet and the Altenberg trio. His father was the musicologist Bob Gilmore, from whom he received instruction in music theory at a young age, and his grandfather is the conductor Lev Markiz, with whom he has performed on many occasions.
Matthew Wadsworth studied lute at London’s Royal Academy of Music with Nigel North, after which he spent a year at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague. Working in the UK, Europe and North America as a soloist and chamber musician, Wadsworth has appeared at most major concert halls and festivals, and can often be heard on radio, both in live performance and recordings.
