In partnership with the City of Edinburgh and Edinburgh International Festival, the Virgin Money Fireworks Concert showcases the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in a respelendent conclusion to the summer festival season.
Set against the iconic backdrop of Edinburgh’s historic castle, this spectacular event brings together stirring orchestral live orchestral music and magnificent pyrotechnics, specially choreographed by international fireworks artists, Pyrovision. Last year, a quarter of a million people gathered across the city and beyond to share in this annual grand festival season finale.
Tchaikovsky’s sumptuous ballet music forms the concert’s centrepiece, with delectable waltzes, marches, mazurkas and more accompanied by exquisitely dancing pyrotechnics. Two rousing Scottish masterpieces open and close the evening: Sir James MacMillan’s infectious ceilidh-inspired Stomp, and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’s joyful show-stopper An Orkney Wedding, with Sunrise, an unforgettable musical portrait of an island marriage complete with riotous traditional folk tunes, tipsy revellers – and the special appearance of a solo bagpiper to herald the dawn.
We're delighted that Karen Matheson of Celtic super-group Capercaillie will join us on stage as the first solo artist to ever perform alongside the Orchestra at the Virgin Money Fireworks Concert. She kicks off the evening performing new versions of her songs specially arranged for the occasion by founding member of Capercaillie Donald Shaw.
