Merry Christmas from the SCO!
As an early Christmas gift from us, enjoy this special choral treat, filmed in Leith Theatre! Conducted by Gregory Batsleer, our SCO Chorus and soloist Kotryna Starkutė perform Silent Night, arranged by Lucy Walker.
‘Silent Night’ is one of the best-known and best-loved carols of them all – so globally revered, in fact, that it was declared a piece of intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2011. It was first heard on Christmas Eve, 1818, in Oberndorf, near Salzburg, where the village’s young Catholic priest Father Joseph Mohr had supplied the words for local schoolmaster and organist Franz Xaver Gruber to set to music. Cambridge-based composer, pianist and educator Lucy Walker has arranged a brand new version performed here by the SCO Chorus and Chorus Director Gregory Batsleer.
