No 2: Ballet Music from William Tell by Rossini

My introduction to this music was in a brass band arrangement which was more respectful to Rossini than was the popular repackaging of the waltz as 'The Scottish Soldier' sung by Andy Stewart.

No 3: Schumann, Piano Quintet opus 44 in Eb

The contrapuntal wizardry in the last movement was enthusiastically pointed out to me by my gleeful school music teacher, Sandy Hood.

No 4: Wagner, Prelude to Act Three of Tristan und Isolde
Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Leonard Bernstein
Scottish Opera’s 1973 production was one of the highlights of my time with the Scottish National Orchestra.

No 5: Sibelius, Symphony No 7
Vienna Philharmonic, Leonard Bernstein
My father-in-law’s love of Sibelius was infectious as we compared recordings late into the night.

No 6: Mozart, Trio Divertimento k 563
Grumiaux Trio
A rich musical experience with only three players. A radio talk by the renowned Hans Keller was my introduction to this piece which I have loved ever since.

No 7: Beethoven, Symphony No 8
Sir Charles Mackerras, SCO live from the Edinburgh Festival (2006)
Of all the many wonderful musical experiences under Mackerras, the Beethoven cycle in 2006 stands out. My colleague on first horn on this recording was Pip Eastop, who performed the same piece with the SCO when we toured India in 2009.
