SCO’s latest CD celebrates the life of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies
Release Date: 23 September 2016
We celebrate the life and works of our much-loved Composer Laureate, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, with a new CD release on Linn Records, Peter Maxwell Davies: An Orkney Wedding, With Sunrise.
Max, as he was affectionately known, was closely associated with the SCO since the 1980s, when he became our composer/conductor-in-residence; this is the last recording preceding his passing in March 2016.
The CD's title track, An Orkney Wedding, with Sunrise, is a delightfully vivid folklike portrayal of a jubilant and rather boozy wedding party on the Orkneyan Isle of Hoy. The music culminates with the dramatic entrance of the Highland bagpipes to end in a blaze of light.
Conductor Ben Gernon also leads the Orchestra in the concert overture Ebb of Winter, which was commissioned and performed by the Orchestra as part of our 40th anniversary celebrations in 2014. It's a piece that takes its inspiration from the sea-spray and haar that Max would reguarly encounter whilst walking his dog on the beaches of Orkney.
The two pieces for solo guitar each demonstrate the emotional frankness of Maxwell Davies' music, from the menacing flashes of Hill Runes to the unaffected tenderness of Farewell to Stromness; young guitarist Sean Shibe is the soloist.
