Aisling O’Dea – My Week on Masterworks

Masterworks 5

We have been travelling around Scotland delivering our project for secondary schools, Masterworks. This project introduces young listeners to the exciting world of classical music and the thrill of hearing an orchestra live. Here are some of my thoughts and observations from the week.

We're on a boat! Sailing to the Isle of Mull en route to the colourful Tobermory with Matt Hardy and the SCO Connect team Julie Aitken and Kirsteen Davidson-Kelly for tomorrow's 'Creative Space Workshop' with dancers, writers and musicians ... Exciting!

Masterworks 2...Arrived - Tobermory.

Masterworks 1

Just finished our first Creative Space Workshop at the Antobar Arts Centre with teens from Tobermory High School. Great fun was had creating loads of material and ideas from 'Giants sleeping in the wildflowers' to a journey of musical postcards inspired by Brahms, performed by a team of clarsach, violin, keyboard, guitar and vibraphone!!! Now on the ferry once again back to Oban - Oban High School tomorrow for more!

Masterworks 6

'Supernova' our new creation based on Twinkle Twinkle Little Star with school kids from Oban High School. A mix of flutes, violins, clarinet and once again vibraphone building up a ground bass riff and creating variations from swing-time to funky circus clowns, skyrockets to shooting stars!! ... See what tomorrow brings in Lochgilphead.

Masterworks 3

Back in Edinburgh now after a wonderful and very busy few days. Wednesday we were at Lochgilphead High School. Led by a grounded electric bass groove and electric and acoustic guitar solos 'Space Skittles' was created. Helensburgh Heritage Academy on Thursday with trombone, tuba and trumpets led the way to a brilliant New Orleans style composition with 6 new variations and 'Twinkle de Picardie'. All created from Twinkle Twinkle Little Star...

Masterworks 4

Friday we were again at the Heritage Academy in the Creative Space with Brahms' Haydn Variations. We found ourselves alongside scriptwriter Jodie Marshall falling in to a dreamworld of dark circus waltzes and ticking clocks! Resulting in 'Dreaming in Wonderland' - so many fabulous ideas.

Both Matt and I thoroughly enjoyed working with all the teens we met this week and seeing how far the journey from such a simple theme could take us. Looking forward to meeting them all again next Thursday at Helensburgh for our Masterworks concert.
