SCO at the 2018 International Festival

Orchestra 2016

In August, we are pleased to present six significant concerts at the 2018 Edinburgh International Festival (EIF).

EIF Opening Concert
Starting with the EIF Opening Concert on Saturday 4 August, the Orchestra will perform Haydn's choral epic The Creation alongside the National Youth Choir of Scotland, under the baton of Edward Gardner, former Music Director of English National Opera and the Chief Conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic.

Brahms: The Complete Symphonies
Following the much-anticipated launch in March 2018 of the Orchestra's recordings of the complete symphonies of Brahms, Robin Ticciati returns to the podium to bring these acclaimed interpretations to the International Festival audience  Symphony Nos 1 and 3 on Saturday 18 August and Symphony Nos 2 and 4 on Sunday 19 August.

Matthias Pintscher conducts Messiaen
On Wednesday 22 August, German conductor Matthias Pintscher  Music Director of the world-renowned contemporary chamber ensemble Ensemble Intercontemporain  conducts Olivier Messiaen's Des Canyons aux Etoiles, featuring award-winning SCO Principal Horn Alec Frank-Gemmill and the stupendously talented French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard as soloists.

Virgin Money Schools Concert
On Monday 27 August at 11am, up to 2000 school children from across Edinburgh join the SCO at the Ross Band Stand for a very special schools concert. The concert, based on Holst's The Planets, presents a fantastic opportunity for pupils to experience the excitement of a live orchestra up close.

Virgin Money Fireworks Concert
The Orchestra brings the 2018 International Festival to a triumphant conclusion at the annual Virgin Money Fireworks Concert on Monday 27 August, performing two irresistibly characterful works - Bernstein's West Side Story – Concert Suite No 1 and Holst's The Planets conducted by Clark Rundell. The music will be brought to life by a spectacular specially-choreographed fireworks display.
