SCO to be joined by Karen Matheson for Virgin Money Fireworks Concert
Karen Matheson of Celtic super-group Capercaillie will join the SCO at this year’s Virgin Money Fireworks Concert. This is the first time in the event’s history that the Orchestra will be joined on stage by a solo artist.
Gavin Reid, Chief Executive of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra said: “This will be the Scottish Chamber Orchestra’s 34th festival fireworks concert and we are thrilled that the brilliant Karen Matheson will be joining us this year. We are also delighted that Virgin Money are our event sponsors once again. Their engagement with Scottish cultural life is hugely impressive and highly valued, helping us to reach out to communities right across Edinburgh and beyond.”
This year the concert will begin with the Orchestra’s performance of Malcolm Arnold’s Scottish Dances, before Karen Matheson joins them on stage to perform new versions of her songs specially arranged for the occasion by founding member of Capercaillie Donald Shaw. The evening will continue with an epic fireworks display choreographed to live orchestral music from renowned Scottish composers Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Sir James MacMillan, alongside Tchaikovsky’s well-loved ballet Sleeping Beauty.
The announcement came as event organisers celebrated the annual Fireworks Concert Poster Competition at Edinburgh’s Virgin Money Lounge. The competition, supported by Fireworks Concert broadcasters Forth One, is now in its sixth year and attracted hundreds of entries from children across Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife.
Fireworks Concert will take place on Monday 28 August. Find out more about the event and book tickets here.
