Explore Days

in-depth study Days delivered by leading academics and guest musicians

SCO Explore Days offer participants the chance to delve deeper into the repertoire performed in the Orchestra's concert season, exploring the composition, challenges of performance and cultural contexts surrounding each work. They usually take place at the weekend and are led by specialist academics, often featuring SCO musicians or performing artists as guest speakers.

In 2016, the participants enjoyed Explore Day on J.S. Bach with Dr. John Kitchen, Honorary Fellow and University Organist at the University of Edinburgh, joined by SCO Assistant Leader Ruth Crouch, and on Richard Strauss with Professor Raymond Holden (Royal Academy of Music) joined by SCO Principal Horn Alec Frank-Gemmill.

In 2017, we had editor of Beethoven Compendium Professor Barry Cooper (The University of Manchester) and SCO Chorus Director Gregory Batsleer deliver fascinating insights into Beethoven's Missa solemnis.

In 2018, Dr John Kitchen returned to SCO Explore Day and talked in depth Mozart's Great Mass in C minor, joined by SCO Chorus Dr Jenny Nex and SCO First Violin Amira Bedrush-McDonald

“I attended seven [SCO Explore Days] in the past - all excellent. I wanted to hear more about [Missa solemnis] before the concert.”
