The celebrated SCO Chorus makes its second appearance of the 2012/13 Season this month, alongside the SCO in Choral Romance. Together they present Brahms’ Liebeslieder Walzer with Schumann’s Nachtlied, led by popular guest conductor Olari Elts. Brahms’ Four Preludes & Four Serious Songs sung by Markus Werba and Schumann’s Zwickau Symphony and Overture, Scherzo and Finale complete the programme.

In this concert of contrasts, both composers are shown in exuberant and reflective moods. Brahms’ sombre Serious Songs, composed during Clara Schumann’s final illness, couldn’t differ more from the composer’s Liebeslieder Walzer, which shows his lighter side. Schumann’s Nachtlied brings the concert to a peaceful close. It was a particular favourite of the composer, who recalled a few days before his death that “I was always especially partial to this piece.”
