The 2009 Bank of Scotland Fireworks Concert held on 6th September proved to be one of the most spectacular ever as tens of thousands of pyrotechnics exploded in the night sky above Princes Street Gardens to music by Handel 250 years after his death. The focal point of this magical event is of course Edinburgh Castle from where the display is launched. This year the Castle was also the venue for a series of SCO Education workshops in advance of the Concert for competition winners from Bank of Scotland and local community groups. Led by Peter Sparkes and bassoonist Fraser Gordon, the workshops aimed to provide some background to the pieces being played by the SCO in the Fireworks Concert (Zadok the Priest, Music for the Royal Fireworks, Arrival of the Queen of Sheba and the Hallelujah Chorus from Messiah) and allowed the participants to create their own music for a mini ‘fireworks display’. Thanks are due to Keith Webb of Pyrovision who followed up the workshops with tours of the fireworks whilst they were being set up and Craig Fletcher, Edinburgh Castle’s Education Officer for his assistance.
